The Anatomy of a Great Headshot Portrait

August 22, 2025

A headshot is often the first impression people have of you or your business. A well-crafted portrait doesn’t just capture your face—it communicates confidence, professionalism, and personality.

As a portrait photographer, here are the essential elements I look for in creating a standout headshot:

1. Quality of Light
Lighting is everything. I use dimensional lighting patterns (2:1 or 3:1 ratios) with kickers and separation lights to create depth. This ensures the subject looks natural, flattering, and professional.
2. Catchlights in the Eyes
Eyes are the focal point of a headshot. A little sparkle, known as a catchlight, brings life and energy, creating a stronger connection with the viewer.
3. Natural Retouching
Professional headshots should look polished without being overdone. I refine stray hairs and skin while maintaining natural-looking texture.
4. Background Separation
A great headshot feels intentional. Whether using a neutral backdrop or incorporating your company environment, I make sure the subject is clearly separated so they stand out.
5. Personality and Expression
The best portraits reflect who you are—approachable, confident, and aligned with your professional brand.
6. Wardrobe and Styling
Clothing choices matter. I guide clients toward looks that align with their brand—textures, colors, and styles that photograph well and support their professional image.
7. Consistency for Teams
When photographing multiple people for a company, consistency in lighting, posing, and style ensures a cohesive, unified look across your website and marketing materials.
8. Technical Finish
Final images are delivered ready for both print and digital use. For companies, I often provide PNG (transparent background) versions so the same portrait can be repurposed across websites, marketing materials, and branded designs.

Headshots for Individuals and Companies
Individual Headshots: My headshot sessions are $250, which includes the session fee and two retouched digital images. This is perfect for entrepreneurs, professionals, and anyone looking to refresh their online presence.

Corporate and Volume Headshots: For businesses, I offer on-site, tethered sessions so team members can immediately select their favorite image. For larger groups, I create custom quotes based on the number of employees and scope of the project. This ensures we can efficiently photograph 5 people, 50, or even 500 while maintaining quality and consistency.

Choosing the right approach—whether using a timeless background or photographing within your company space—gives your headshots a heartbeat that connects with your brand and culture.

Why Invest in Professional Headshots
